Tambor Seeks Listing Amid Revenue Growth Without Profit Boost: Can the Outdoor Boom Pave Its Capital Path?

Time:2025-10-14

Recently, professional outdoor apparel brand Tambor Group Co., Ltd. formally submitted its listing application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange's main board, with China International Capital Corporation acting as sole sponsor. Founded in 2004, the company previously listed on the National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ) in 2015 before delisting over two years later. Times have changed. Against the backdrop of peers like Arc'teryx's parent company Amer Sports and Berthold seeking capital market listings, Tambor's Hong Kong IPO is seen as a crucial step to secure a key position in an increasingly crowded field.

Revenue growth coexists with profit volatility

The prospectus positions Tambor as China's leading professional outdoor apparel brand, with product lines spanning specialised domains such as skiing, mountaineering and hiking, alongside everyday light outdoor scenarios like picnicking and commuting.

Fundamentally, the company's revenue scale continues to expand. From 2022 to 2024, revenues reached RMB 732 million, RMB 1.021 billion, and RMB 1.302 billion respectively; the first half of 2025 saw RMB 658 million, maintaining growth momentum.

However, profit performance has not kept pace with revenue growth. During the same period, net profits stood at RMB 85.774 million, RMB 139 million, and RMB 107 million respectively, with the first half of 2025 recording RMB 35.937 million, illustrating a scenario of ‘revenue growth without profit growth’. Regarding gross profit margin, the company recorded 50.2%, 56.5% and 54.9% from 2022 to 2024 respectively. This declined to 54.2% in the first half of 2025, representing a 5.6 percentage point decrease year-on-year.

Concerning expenses, the company's sales and distribution costs surged significantly from RMB 200 million in 2022 to RMB 508 million in 2024. Their proportion of total revenue climbed from 27.3% to 39.0%, potentially contributing to the erosion of profit margins.

Product-wise, as of 30 June 2025, Tambor maintained 687 SKUs across three main series: premium outdoor, sports outdoor, and urban light outdoor. The urban light outdoor series, priced between ¥200-400, served as the absolute revenue driver, contributing nearly 70% of total income. However, the gross margin for this series stood at 51.4% in the first half of 2025, a decline of 5.9 percentage points from 57.3% in the same period last year, reflecting pricing pressures on the company's core products.

Online Expansion and Offline Adjustments

In response to market shifts, Tambor is actively driving channel transformation. Offline, the company is closing smaller-scale stores while expanding into premium shopping centres to open new outlets targeting higher-potential consumer segments. This strategy caused short-term pain, resulting in a slight decline in offline channel revenue to RMB 635 million in 2024. However, the first half of 2025 saw a 37.87% year-on-year increase to RMB 285 million, indicating initial success in the transformation.

The online channel emerged as a highlight during the reporting period. Online revenue surged from RMB 226 million in 2022 to RMB 626 million in 2024, with a substantial 168.5% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2025. Concurrently, the online gross profit margin rose significantly from 42.0% in 2022 to 53.4% in the first half of 2025, reflecting optimised operational efficiency in the digital sphere.

High-Growth Sector Amid Uncertain Landscape

China's outdoor apparel industry is undergoing rapid expansion and structural transformation. Driven by policy support, consumption upgrades, and social media catalysis, professional outdoor wear has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments within the apparel sector. Data indicates its market size expanded from RMB 68.8 billion in 2019 to RMB 131.9 billion in 2024, achieving a compound annual growth rate of 13.9%. Projections indicate the market will expand further to RMB 287.1 billion by 2029.

However, the current market landscape remains fragmented, with the mid-to-high-end segment predominantly dominated by international brands. Based on 2024 retail sales, the top ten brands collectively held only 24.3% market share. Tambor ranks seventh among China's professional outdoor apparel brands with a 1.5% market share, placing fourth among domestic brands.

Tambor focuses on the mass market, with its product price range primarily controlled below RMB 1,000. In the first half of 2025, its urban light outdoor series priced between RMB 200-400 contributed approximately 70% of revenue; the sports outdoor series in the RMB 400-600 bracket accounted for less than 30%; while the premium outdoor series represented under 5%.

This market positioning subjects it to a competitive squeeze from all sides: upwards, it faces established international premium brands like Arc'teryx, which dominate the high-end segment through technological barriers and brand heritage; in the mid-tier, it competes fiercely with international mass-market brands such as The North Face and Columbia, alongside domestic rivals like Kelme and Taurus; and downwards, it must contend with price competition from numerous white-label manufacturers and small-to-medium enterprises.

Furthermore, with revenue heavily reliant on urban light outdoor collections, Tambor has evolved into a lifestyle brand whose competitive boundaries extend beyond professional outdoor gear into the functional product lines of fast-fashion brands like Uniqlo. Breaking into the mid-to-high-end segment requires substantial, long-term investment in R&D and brand building. Given that premium collections currently account for less than 5% of its portfolio, this brand elevation journey remains protracted.

This Hong Kong IPO represents a pivotal moment for Tambor to capitalise on the outdoor economy's momentum and achieve brand elevation. The company's demonstrated agility in channel transformation, particularly online operations, alongside efficiency gains, constitutes a key narrative strength. However, within a fiercely competitive market environment, the core challenges of addressing insufficient brand moats and profitability pressures, alongside balancing the mass market foundation with brand elevation, will determine whether it secures sustained recognition from capital markets.
